Ukraine is looking for the opportunity to “directly” talk to China about the ongoing conflict with Russia, since the PRC is probably the only power that can influence Moscow's position. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated this in an interview with the South Chana Morning Post.

“I would like to speak directly. I had one conversation with Chinese President] Xi Jinping a year ago. Since the beginning of the large-scale aggression on February 24, we have officially asked for a conversation, but we (have not) had any conversations with China, although I think it would be useful, — he declared.

Zelensky stressed that Xi Jinping was one of the few world leaders to have visited Ukraine “at least once,” adding that the Chinese leader warmly reminisced about his ties to the eastern European country during a phone call between the two leaders last year.

According to the Ukrainian president, China is Russia's key economic partner, therefore, “as a big and powerful country, it can come and sort of put the Russian Federation in a certain place.” “I am sure, I am sure that without the Chinese market for the Russian Federation, Russia would feel in complete economic isolation,” — said Zelensky.

He also pointed out that Ukraine shares similar values with China, such as “love for family and children.” In addition, according to the president, the Chinese economy is suffering from the conflict in Ukraine, which sells fewer goods due to the energy crisis around the world. “People will have to pay for energy, not for goods coming from China <…> Exports from China will decline. It's 100 percent, — he explained.

What are their mistakes?Since the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Chinese officials have more than once advocated speedy negotiations and a peaceful resolution of the conflict. At the same time, China did not join the sanctions against Russia. Chairman of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) Guo Shuqing explained this by the fact that Beijing has always opposed unilateral sanctions, which, according to him, do not allow to effectively solve problems.

In addition, the Foreign Minister Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Yi has previously said that Western countries should also start a comprehensive dialogue with Russia, and the supply of weapons will not be able to bring the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine closer.

The US authorities have repeatedly warned the PRC about the consequences if they provide support Russia against the backdrop of events in Ukraine— both economic and military. According to Washington Post sources, Xi Jinping instructed advisers to figure out how to provide financial assistance to Russia without violating restrictive measures. Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang called the data on Beijing's assistance to Moscow “disinformation”.
