Telephone codes for fixed phones of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) have been transferred to the Russian format since August 1. On July 25, the Ministry of Communications of the DPR announced plans to introduce such a change. The new code of the republic— +7 (856).

«At the same time, the internal telephone number of subscribers will remain unchanged. For example, if there was (+38062) 1234567, then now (+7856) 1234567»,— said in a message published on the agency's website.

Earlier, on July 25, the Russian code +7 (857) was assigned to landline phone numbers in the Luhansk People's Republic, the local Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications reported. The head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, said that this shows “our unity with Russia.”

In May, RBC reported that the Russian code +7 would be assigned to subscribers of mobile operators in the DPR and LPR. The format of the new numbers of residents of the DPR— +7949-XXX—XX—XX, LPR— +7959-XXX—XX—XX, where the last seven digits are the same as the last seven digits of the Phoenix operator number in the Donetsk People's Republic and “Lugak”— in Luhansk. The head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, explained that after the innovation, it will be easier for citizens to conduct transactions in Russian banks and register on online service portals. Subscribers were informed about the assignment of a new number via SMS.

Code +7 is valid in Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In July, the Kazakh portal TengriNews reported, citing the Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic, Bagdat Musin, that by 2025 Kazakhstan will switch to its own code (+997).

On February 21, Russia recognized the independence of the DPR and LPR and signed treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with them. After that, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, saying that this decision violates the sovereignty of Ukraine and the country will remain within internationally recognized borders, “despite the statements” Russia.
