Ukraine proposes to ban all Russian media
According to the Minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko, the relevant amendments are being developed. He pointed to the need for reforms in the field of media, since the current laws were created in the 90s and are already outdated
The Ukrainian authorities are developing a draft law that will ban all Russian media, Minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko said on Telegram. This, he said, would “double” efforts to “combat Russian fakes and disinformation”.
We are talking about finalizing the draft law “On Media”. The head of the Ministry of Culture explained that now in Ukraine there are laws on the media dating back to the 1990s, and the “media landscape” has changed significantly with the advent of fast Internet, social networks and streaming services, this needs to be streamlined.
“It is very important that finally a co-regulation norm appears, when media workers, together with the National Council [on Television and Radio Broadcasting] and the Ministry of Culture and information policy can participate in the settlement of certain important issues, — added by Tkachenko.
On July 21, this bill and the issue of its compliance with European directives were discussed with the National Council, the office of Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Olga Stefanishina and the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, the minister said.
The head of the committee, Nikita Poturaev, at a meeting on Thursday, recalled that the bill “On Media” body approved in 2020. After consideration in the first reading, the Rada sent it for revision. The document was sent for examination to the European Commission, now the parliament is waiting for its recommendations.
Shortly after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported that the websites of the Lenta.ru publication, TASS agencies and RIA Novosti were blocked, RT channel and other media, as well as several state portals by the joint forces of the cyberpolice and volunteers.
