Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held telephone conversations with his Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar, they discussed the situation in Ukraine and Syria, according to the Telegram channel Russian department.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the conversation took place at the initiative of Ankara.
“The main attention was paid to the exchange of views and assessments of the situation in Ukraine and Syria. The Ministers of Defense discussed in detail the issues of safety of navigation in the Black Sea in connection with the solution of the problem of exporting grain from the territory of Ukraine,— the report said.
The parties also noted “the importance of continuing close cooperation in Syria aimed at maintaining long-term stability in the region.”
Against the backdrop of a Russian special operation, grain has accumulated in Ukrainian ports, ships cannot take it out. The UN urged Russia to unblock the ports, saying that refusal could lead to starvation. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it does not prevent ships from leaving, and they cannot leave the ports, since coastal waters are mined by Kyiv.
The Russian authorities also denied accusations of problems with food supplies. As President Vladimir Putin noted, the difficulties that have arisen are related, among other things, “to failures in the operation of production and logistics chains, as well as to the financial policy of Western countries during the pandemic.” In connection with the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions by the United States and the European Union, the situation worsened, he added.

Turkey offered its assistance in resolving the issue of Ukrainian grain supplies. As Anadolu learned, Moscow, Kyiv and Ankara, with the assistance of the UN, have developed a “road map” that will allow the export of about 20 million tons of grain and sunflower seeds from Ukrainian ports. However, Ukraine has not yet approved the plan, as it fears that clearing the port would leave the port vulnerable to Russian troops, sources told Bloomberg. In the words of President Volodymyr Zelensky, “the best guarantee” unblocking ports will be the supply of anti-ship weapons to Kyiv and their deployment in the region.
